I recently had the privilege of interviewing Sowmyanarayan Sampath for YPO Big Apple in a candid discussion on leadership, culture, and the power of leading with empathy.
As a fellow Boston University alumnus, I especially appreciated hearing his reflections on leadership at the highest levels of business.
As former CEO of Verizon Consumer Group, Sampath led the division responsible for approximately $107 billion in annual revenue, representing nearly 80% of Verizon’s overall business. Despite the scale of that responsibility, his leadership philosophy remained remarkably grounded: lead with kindness, maintain an open-door culture, and never lose sight of the people behind the numbers.
He spoke about creating environments where employees feel heard and valued while maintaining high standards of accountability and performance. It was a powerful reminder that empathy and excellence are not mutually exclusive.
His advice to young professionals was equally compelling. Talent matters. Grit matters more. Success often comes from a willingness to work hard, embrace challenges, and keep moving forward when things do not go according to plan.
What resonated most was his belief that leadership is ultimately about people. Strategy, technology, and financial performance are essential. The leaders who leave the greatest impact build cultures grounded in trust, accessibility, compassion, and accountability.
Thank you, Sampath, for sharing your insights with our chapter. Your transparency, humility, and humor were refreshing.
